Der Mugrdechian SAS Outstanding Book Awards Announced

The Society for Armenian Studies (SAS) is pleased to announce that Talar Chahinian’s Stateless: The Politics of the Armenian Language in Exile (Syracuse University Press, 2023) and Ari Şekeryan’s The Armenians and the Fall of the Ottoman Empire: After Genocide, 1918–1923 (Cambridge University Press, 2023) have been awarded this year’s Der Mugrdechian SAS Outstanding Book Award. An honorable mention has been awarded to Vartan Matiossian’s The Politics of Naming the Armenian Genocide: Language, History, and ‘Medz Yeghern’ (I.B. Tauris, 2022).

Dr. Vahram Lalayan’s Book on Narekatsi Published Posthumously by Society for Armenian Studies

The Society for Armenian Studies has posthumously sponsored the publication of Dr. Vahram Lalayan’s book “Mystical Perception of the Book of Lamentations by Grigor Narekatsi in the 13th – 18th Centuries.” Dr. Lalayan was a medieval theologian and the head of the Department of History at Grigor Narekatsi University in Artsakh. He was killed by Azeri forces in Meds Tagher village in Hadrut during the 2020 war.

Society for Armenian Studies (SAS) Statement on Anti-Racism

The Society for Armenian Studies (SAS) condemns the continuing violence against Black communities within and outside the United States, and we feel it is a matter of human dignity and our duty to express our outrage.  As a professional organization dedicated to understanding the complexities of the past and the present, we stand in solidarity with the Black Community and other Communities of Color and commit alongside them to the eradication of white supremacy, institutional and systematic  racism, and anti-Black violence with the aim to institute justice and human rights. We acknowledge that we are working in an academic system that was built on racist hierarchies. There is no meritocracy when racism is so deeply rooted in our society.  Silencing the voices of anyone (whether based on religion, language, gender, sexuality, skin color, ethnicity, etc) irreparably diminishes us all. The Executive Council of SAS stands with the Black Lives Matter movement and the Black community not only in working against anti-Black violence, but against all types of racial discrimination which is built on past historical injustices. 

Armenian Studies Chairs and Directors Meet to Discuss the Future of the Field

On September 29, the majority of current Armenian Studies Chairs and Directors in the United States, along with representatives of the Society for Armenian Studies (SAS), National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR), and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation met for an “Armenian Studies Chairs and Directors Workshop: Current Challenges & Future Prospects” at the University of California – Irvine. The meeting which was the first of its kind in the west coast was organized by UCI’s Armenian Studies Program, the UCI Meghrouni Family Presidential Chair in Armenian Studies (Professor Houri Berberian), the UCLA Richard Hovannisian Endowed Chair in Modern Armenian History (Professor Sebouh Aslanian), and the Society for Armenian Studies (Professor Bedross Der Matossian, SAS President).

The Society for Armenian Studies Organizes an International Conference on the First Republic of Armenia

An international conference, “Innovative Approaches to the History of the First Republic of Armenian, 1918-1920,” will take place from noon-3:00PM on Thursday, November 15, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas. The conference, co-sponsored by the Society for Armenian Studies (SAS) and the Armenian Communities Department of the Gulbenkian Foundation, will be held in the Travis D (3) room of the Grand Hyatt San Antonio in conjunction with the Middle East Studies Association 52nd Annual Meeting to take place at the same hotel between November 15-18, 2018.

The Society for Armenian Studies Launches its Podcast Series

The Society for Armenian Studies (SAS) has just launched its Podcast Series. In the first interview, Dr. George Bournoutian (Iona College) discusses his new book, Armenia and Imperial Decline from 1900-1914: The Province of Yerevan (Milton Park, Abingdon, Oxon: Routledge, 2018), with Varak Ketsemanian (Ph.D. student, Princeton University).The aim of the SAS Podcast Series is to interview recent authors in the field of Armenian Studies in the broader understanding and disseminate the knowledge about the latest research in the field. The SAS Podcast Series committee consists of: Anna Aleksanyan, Clark University; Jesse Arlen, UCLA; Dzovinar Derderian, U-Michigan Ann Arbor; Varak Ketsemanian, Princeton University, and Armen Manuk-Khaloyan, Georgetown University.

Society for Armenian Studies Holds Annual Membership Meeting in Washington

The Society for Armenian Studies held a series of activities and a conference to mark its 44th Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, November 18. Members were welcomed by SAS President Barlow Der Mugrdechian (California State University, Fresno), who presented reports on various activities of the Society. Earlier that same day, the SAS Executive Council met to focus on strategic planning and to map out the future direction of the organization.

Society for Armenian Studies Elects New Executive Officers

On Wednesday, December 6, 2017, the Society for Armenan Studies Executive Council held its first meeting. Executive Council officers were elected with Bedross Der Matossian (University of Nebraska-Lincoln) as the new SAS President. Also elected were Vice-President Vartan Matiossian (Armenian National Education Committee, NY); Secretary Khatchig Mouradian (Columbia University); Treasurer Vahe Sahakyan (University of Michigan-Ann Arbor); and advisors Alison Vacca (University of Tennessee-Knoxville), Barlow Der Mugrdechian (California State University, Fresno), and Arpi Siyahian (NUtech Ventures-UNL).

Society for Armenian Studies to Hold Annual Meeting and Conference on Western Armenian

An international conference, “Transmitting Western Armenian to the Next Generation” will take place from noon-3:00PM on Saturday, November 18, 2017. The conference, co-sponsored by the Society for Armenian Studies (SAS) and the Armenian Communities Department of the Gulbenkian Foundation, will be held in the Virginia B (L) room of the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, in Washington, D.C.

The Society for Armenian Studies will also hold its 44th Annual Meeting at 3:00PM on Saturday, November 18, immediately following the conference in the same venue. All members are welcome to attend the Annual Meeting, which is being held in conjunction with the Middle East Studies Association (MESA) Annual Meeting.

Society of Armenian Studies to Host Conference on ‘Armenians in America’

The Society for Armenian Studies has organized an international conference titled, ‘The Armenians in America,’ to take place on Nov. 17, in Boston.

The SAS organized conference will feature two panels beginning at 1 p.m. in Salon B of the Boston Marriott Copley Place Hotel. The conference is free and open to the public.

Two Book Awards for Armenian Studies

Dr. Sona Aronian Book Prizes for Excellence in Armenian Studies (NAASR)

The National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR) recently announced the creation of the Dr. Sona Aronian Book Prizes for Excellence in Armenian Studies. The prizes will be awarded annually to an outstanding scholarly monograph in the English language in the field of Armenian studies and, in alternating years, to a translation from Armenian into English of a work of literature or of an academic book within the field of Armenian studies.

Society for Armenian Studies Hosts Conference on ‘Armenians in the Ottoman Empire’

The Society for Armenian Studies (SAS), a primarily American association of scholars and supporters of Armenology, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. It held an international conference in Yerevan in October, and on November 21-22, it convened a conference in Washington, DC, called “Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in the 19th-20th Centuries.”

On its fortieth anniversary, the Society for Armenian Studies (SAS) organized an unprecedented workshop from October 3-5, at the presidential hall of sessions of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, with forty-two scholars from Armenia and abroad who delivered papers in English or in Armenian. “Many of the presentations and discussions were indeed fascinating and thought-provoking,” noted Nareg Seferian, while Jennifer Manoukian remarked: “The most positive aspect of the conference was without a doubt getting the chance to mingle with scholars working on similar topics. Hearing about projects in the works and sharing resources to facilitate these projects would have been difficult to do without the face-to-face interaction that the conference provided.” Many participants expressed the hope that this workshop will become a regular feature.

Society for Armenian Studies Will Hold 40th Anniversary Workshop in Yerevan

The Society for Armenian Studies (SAS), founded in 1974, will organize a workshop to mark the 40th anniversary of its founding. The workshop, to take place October 3-5, 2014, with the participation of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences, will bring together twenty scholars from abroad and twenty from Armenia to deliver papers on a number of topics such as inadequately studied aspects of Armenian history in the past millennium; the representation and reflection of the Armenian Genocide in the arts and culture in general; testimonies and reminiscences of the survivors of the Genocide; accomplishments, perspectives and methodologies in contemporary Armenian literary studies and historiography; and, the Armenian Diaspora in the 21st century, aspirations and challenges. The workshop will take place at the Presidium Hall of Sessions at the Armenian National Academy of Sciences.
