Virabyan, Matiossian, and Astourian to Present at the ARF’s First Republic Conference

The Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Western United States, in collaboration with the California State Northridge Armenian Studies Program, has organized a two-day academic conference, “Armenian Statehood Reborn: Achievements and Reflections,” to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the first Republic of Armenia. The conference will take place on Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6 at the Plaza del Sol Hall on the campus of CSU Northridge.

During this two-day academic conference, the program will feature presentations by Dr. Amatuni Virabyan, Dr. Vartan Matiossian, and Dr. Stephan Astourian, among others.

Questioning the Unquestionable: Marc Nichanian’s "Mourning Philology"

Have you ever felt that contemporary philosophy is useless? That you do not have the time to think about the intangible and unimportant questions that it asks? This is how I used to feel when I was an undergraduate at UCLA some years ago, studying chemistry and biology, and striving to attend medical school after graduation. But everything changed when I started reading Marc Nichanian. His books and essays did not just restore my faith in the need for philosophy; they made me think about the ways in which I could negotiate between my diasporic life and Armenian heritage, creatively and philosophically.

Nota del traductor: Kostán Zarián (1885-1969), uno de los más brillantes escritores y ensayistas armenios del siglo XX, en la década de 1930 visitó España (1933) y los Estados Unidos (1934-1935). El resultado de estas visitas fue un ensayo basado en un diario de viaje, y titulado “Países y dioses” (Երկիրներ եւ աստուածներ). “España” se publicó entre 1935 y 1936 en la revista mensual “Hairenik” de Boston, continuado por “Estados Unidos” (inconcluso) entre 1936 y 1938. Tal como la mayor parte de la obra de Zarián, ambos ensayos aparecieron póstumamente en forma de libro y por separado, en ediciones realizadas en Ereván: “España” se publicó en 1998 y “Estados Unidos” en 2002.

Ofrecemos a continuación el prólogo de “Países y dioses”, publicado en noviembre de 1935. El lector probablemente advierta un análisis extrañamente familiar sobre lo que el autor llama el “ensanchamiento” del mundo. La razón es, simplemente, que la globalización no es un fenómeno de hoy; Zarián fue uno de los primeros escritores armenios (si no el primero) que ya había tocado el tema en la década de 1920.
