Dr. Vartan Matiossian to Discuss ‘Language, History, and Medz Yeghern’ in Zoom Lecture

Dr. Vartan Matiossian will discuss “What’s in a Name: Language, the Politics of the Armenian Genocide, and ‘Medz Yeghern’” in a Zoom presentation. The presentation, which will be held at 7 p.m. PST on Friday, January 28, is part of the Spring 2022 Lecture Series of the Armenian Studies Program at California State University at Fresno and is supported by the Leon S. Peters Foundation.

California State University, Fresno Armenian Studies Program Director Prof. Barlow Der Mugrdechian announced that Krikor Beledian’s Fifty Years of Armenian Literature in France has been published by the Armenian Series of The Press, at California State University, Fresno.

A Brief History of the Armenian Studies Program at Fresno State 1960-2012

Armenian Studies courses have been taught at Fresno State for more than fifty years. Dr. Richard Hovannisian taught Armenian Studies courses through the extension program, 1960-1962. Dr. Louise Nalbandian of the History Department began teaching Armenian history at Fresno State in 1967, soon developing a broader program, including language and culture classes. Serpouhie Messerlian taught Armenian language courses beginning in 1970 and Dr. Arra Avakian taught a variety of Armenian culture and history courses from 1970-1973.
