Talaat Pasha in Public Places of Turkey: Full List

Vartan Matiossian
As usual, the Turkish press and online media were filled with articles and news related to the Armenian Genocide in the days before April 24. A long piece appeared in the website "Aykırı  Doğrular" (www.aykiridogrular.com) about Mehmet Talaat Pasha, Ministry of Interior of the Ottoman Empire and architect of the genocide.

The article, entitled "Ermenilere uygulanan soykırımın Dâhiliye Nazırı" (The Interior Minister of the genocide of the Armenians), revolves around the central idea that Talaat, despite having been condemned to death in absentia by the Ottoman martial court in July 1919, fled to Germany; in March 1921, he was located and killed by Soghomon Tehlirian in Berlin, where he was buried. In 1926 a special law allocated a pension for life to his wife, Hayriye Hanım, and the building which had previously belonged to an Armenian, Aram Fındıklıyan, as her residence.
On February 20, 1943, the remnants of Talaat Pasha were taken out from a Muslim cemetery in Berlin and brought to Istanbul. Five days later, they were interred in Şişli with an official ceremony.
The website has also published a lengthy list of neighborhoods, streets and avenues, mosques and schools, and other buildings and institutions which today have been named after Talaat.
