As the readers of this blog know, Syrian President Bashar-al Assad has gone on record comparing the Armenian genocide to the brutal killing of civilians by foreign fighters in Syria during an interview with Agence France Press (AFP): "In more recent modern times, it reminds us of the massacres perpetrated by the Ottomans against the Armenians when they killed a million and a half Armenians and half a million Orthodox Syriacs in Syria and in Turkish territory."

France’s Stance on Armenian Genocide Unchanged, Hollande Says in Turkey

On a visit to Turkey, French President Francois Hollande has made it clear that France’s fundamental stance on the Armenian genocide was unchanged.

At a joint press conference with Turkish President Abdullah Gul both sides stuck to their positions in a row over France’s official recognition of a genocide by Ottoman Turks of Armenians in World War I — something Turkey contests, AFP reports.

Enduring Myths of Sectarianism in Syria

Over the last six months, analysts have shifted from describing the Syrian uprising-cum-civil war as a democratic uprising to highlighting its increasing sectarian dimensions. For those watching closely, sectarian undertones were evident early on. Most distinct were the regime’s attacks against the Sunni neighborhood of Baba Amr during the “Siege of Homs” in February 2012. After Syrian forces leveled the neighborhood, armed militants targeted Homs’s Christian population, which numbered around 800,000. Subsequently, 90 percent of Homs’s Christian population was erased.1 As the uprising increasingly militarized, the politics of revenge became business as usual.

Romanian University Will Have an Institute of Armenian Studies

The University of Babeş-Bolyai, in Cluj (Transilvania), may become the first institution of higher education in Romania to have an Institute of Armenian Studies. The announcement was made by Professor Lucian Năstasă-Kovacs, reported Araratonline.com, the periodical of the Armenian Union of Romania.

Armenian President Among Health Tourists in South Korea

Korea's booming medical tourism industry has for the first time attracted a foreign head of state as the Armenian president had rejuvenation treatment here recently.
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan was driven by a convoy of black sedans to Chaum Center in Gangnam on Jan. 9 led by a police escort. Chaum is a rejuvenation clinic run by CHA Health Systems.
Accompanying Sargsyan were the ex-president of a former Soviet satellite nation and a Russian tycoon from Armenia (*). The tycoon had also been part of Russian President Vladimir Putin's entourage on his state visit last year and experienced the clinic's service at the time.

Reading Books is Fundamental

The old adage says that Armenian people do not read. Moreover, in the past ninety years, books in the Diaspora have been published in editions between 200 and 2,000 copies. The same has happened in Armenia after independence. We are "happy" to report that we are not alone, according to an article by Charles M. The Syrian crisis began in the spring of 2011, but it wasn’t until violence hit Aleppo in late July 2012 that the first wave of Syrian Armenians began trickling into Armenia. Within just a couple of months, 3,000 refugees were living in the country. While their numbers have continued to increase—just past 11,000, according to a recent report by the Armenian Ministry of Diaspora—a significant portion have left Armenia for Europe, the U.S., or other Western countries.

“My father passed away a few years before the beginning of the conflict. My mother works as a cook for 12 hours a day, while my 14-year-old brother attends school,” says Daron, 16, a Syrian-Armenian waiter in Yerevan. “I can’t go to school because I have to support my family.”

The 34 months of the Syrian crisis has resulted in 120,000 deaths, 7 million internally displaced persons (IDP), and 2.3 million refugees.¹ Although the situation of the refugees across the Middle East, or even in certain European states like Bulgaria,² is drastically worse than the circumstance of the Syrian Armenians in Armenia, nonetheless those who have resettled in Armenia are also facing numerous economic, social, and legal challenges.

Diaspora Historian Argues Against "One Nation, One Homeland" Myth

Turkey: An Action Movie without a ‘Good Guy’

In Turkey today, a very high-tempo, high-tension action scene is unfolding, with a life-or-death fight at the top of the state apparatus. A volcano of corruption is erupting once more, releasing all the filth from below the surface. We’re seeing the sons of cabinet members being taken from their homes, alongside prominent businessmen, and put into custody; the mass removal of middle- to high-ranking security officers; and comprehensive changes in the juridical organization. But there are no prospects for a better Turkey, because both parties of this fierce fight belong to the “bad guy” club—the ruling AK Party and the informal but all-mighty clandestine organization of the “Gulen community.”

The audience is deprived of the expectation of a reward for watching these horrors play out. There is no hope for the emergence of a good guy, who will punish the bad and set things right. There is no need to wait for it, because there is no good guy at all in this action film. None of the already-few forces of democracy in Turkey have the slightest role to play in the plot.

Armenian Official Suggests Renaming Armenia

Armenia’s Education and Science minister Armen Ashotyan proposed on January 17, 2014 that the official name of the country – the Republic of Armenia – be changed to the Republic of Eastern Armenia.

Historically, Armenia has been divided into Eastern and Western Armenia, Eastern Armenia being part of the Persian Empire until the beginning of the 19th century, before it became part of the Russian Empire. Part of Eastern Armenia later became the First Republic for two short years before it was seized by the Bolsheviks to become the Soviet Armenian Republic. In 1991, it was proclaimed as the independent Republic of Armenia.

Hagop Barsoumian's Book on Armenian Amiras Published in Turkish

On December 25 Istanbul’s Aras Publishing published the Turkish translation of Hagop L. Barsoumian’s The Armenian Amira Class of Istanbul (İstanbul’un Ermeni Amiralar Sınıfı, in Turkish). Human rights activist Ayse Gunaysu, who is also a professional translator and a columnist for the Armenian Weekly, edited the book and prepared it for publication.

Originally published by the American University of Armenia (AUA) in 2007, The Armenian Amira Class of Istanbul was Barsoumian’s 1980 doctoral dissertation at Columbia University.

Get Ready for 2015: Turkey Will Teach "Objective History" to Armenians, Erdoğan Says

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has tasked Turkish ambassadors with “telling the truth” about a “treacherous” corruption probe in their host countries, encouraging them to say the investigation is a treacherous plot against Turkey’s credibility and foreign policy targets.
“None of you should be negligent. You should tell the truth to all necessary authorities [in the countries you are serving]. We should take all necessary steps together,” Erdoğan said in an address to hundreds of Turkey’s ambassadors representing the country throughout the world.

Armenian Review Digitization Project Receives Gulbenkian Grant

The Armenian Review, published in Watertown (Massachussetts), recently received a grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation of Portugal to support its project to digitize the entire collection, from 1948 to the present, in an effort to promote preservation and accessibility. The goal of the digitization project is to allow readers and researchers keyword searchable online access to every article published in the journal’s nearly 200 issues.

New Book Provides Shocking Evidence of German Co-Responsibility in Armenian Genocide

The German ambassador in Constantinople, Count Paul Wolff-Metternich, wrote to the Imperial Chancellor, Theobald von Bethmann Hollweg, in Berlin on December 7, 1915:
"… Our displeasure over the persecution of the Armenians should be clearly expressed in our press and an end be put to our gushing over the Turks. Whatever they are accomplishing is due to our doing; those are our officers, our cannons, our money… In order to achieve any success in the Armenian question, we will have to inspire fear in the Turkish government regarding the consequences. If, for military considerations, we do not dare to confront it with a firmer stance, then we will have no choice but… to stand back and watch how our ally continues to massacre."

Two years before his death in 1921, Hovhannes Tumanian wrote a letter to Avetik Isahakian.

“…I do not want and cannot write long from our country, although you ask this of me. In short, I will say that we have destroyed our country from within and from beyond. Mainly we. I am saying we, and herein lies the truth. Some are unruly scoundrels, others are robbers and thieves, others are incompetent derelicts and there wasn’t a multitude, at the very least a small group, who would uncover the renewed breath or moral capability. Amidst the calamities and the losses, not a single guilty person was revealed, no one was brought to justice and no one answered. And it continues. «Հետք»ը կը հաղորդէ, որ այսօր՝ Յունուար 8ին, երկարատեւ հիւանդութենէ ետք, իր մահկանացուն կնքած է հայրենի տաղանդաւոր արձակագիր Լեւոն Խեչոյեանը։

Քաղցկեղէ տառապած Խեչոյեանը բուժումի ենթարկուած էր Գերմանիոյ մէջ, որմէ ետք բժիշկներու խորհուրդով ետ ղրկուած էր Հայաստան։

Լեւոն Խեչոյեան ծնած էր Դեկտեմբեր 8, 1955ին, Ախալքաղալի շրջանի Բարալէթ գիւղը։ 1983ին աւարտած է Լենինականի (այժմ՝ Գիւմրի) մանկավարժական հիմնարկի բանասիրական ճիւղը։ 1987էն ի վեր կ՚՚ապրէր եւ կը ստեղծագործէր Հրազդան քաղաքը։ Մասնակցած է արցախեան ազատամարտին։ Առաջին հատորը («Խնկի ծառեր») հրատարակած է 1991ին։ 1999ին «Սեւ գիրք, ծանր բզէզ» վէպի համար արժանացած է «Ոսկէ եղէգն» պետական մրցանակին: Տպագրուած է շարք մը արտասահմանեան ամսագրերու մէջ։

Petition Asks Switzerland to Appeal Genocide Denial Verdict

In the struggle against Turkish denial of the Armenian Genocide, the Coordination Council of Armenian Organizations of France (CCAF) has launched a petition asking Switzerland to appeal the most recent judgment of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which found that the ultra-nationalist Dogu Perinçek, president of the Workers’ Party of Turkey, could not be condemned for saying publicly in Geneva in 2007 that the “so-called Armenian genocide is an international lie.”

Un petitorio reclama que Suiza apele el veredicto de negación del genocidio armenio.

El Consejo de Coordinación de Organizaciones Armenias de Francia (CCAF) ha lanzado un petitorio que reclama a Suiza que apele la reciente resolución de la Corte Europea de Derechos Humanos (ECHR), que dictaminó que el ultranacionalista turco Dogu Perinçek, presidente del Partido de los Trabajadores de Turquía, no puede ser condenado por declarar públicamente en Ginebra en 2007 que el "llamado genocidio armenio es una mentira internacional".

An Armenian Christmas Surprise

Dear Diary,
Last week I was at J.F.K., shivering my way into a taxi, en route to Park Slope. Relieved to be heading home, I decided not to plug in my headphones and talk to Carl, the driver, instead.
I gave him my address. We talked about the weather. He asked where I was from. Somehow we got around to my parents living in Los Angeles.
Carl: “No kidding. I used to live out there. There’s a big Armenian population over in Glendale.”
Me: “Wait, you’re Armenian? I’m Armenian. Well, 25 percent. My mom’s last name is Tutelian.” (Armenian names typically end in “ian.”)
Carl: “My man!” He thrust his hand in my direction for a shake. “Bakalian, that’s my name.”
The conversation immediately steered toward all things Armenian, especially food. I mentioned that I loved lahmajun, a thin-crusted “Armenian pizza” with minced lamb and spices. Carl moaned, “Ahhhh, lahmaJUN! When was the last time you had some good lahmajun?”
“Not for a long while,” I said.
“Well you’re not going find it in Brooklyn,” Carl declared. “Massis in Sunnyside is it. I can bring you some.”
Me: “Seriously?”
Carl: “Yeah, seriously!”
Fast forward five days. My phone rings.
“Come down and meet me on the corner,” said the voice. “I’m in a hurry.”
I sprinted down and rushed over to Carl’s car. The trunk is open. He pulled out two dozen lahmajun and handed them to me.
“This is my Armenian Christmas gift to you,” he said. “I gotta run.”
I could barely utter “thank you” before he got in his car and drove away. Merry Christmas, Carl.

Christmas in Armenia: A Culinary Perspective

Christmas time for an Armenian family tends to be one of the biggest events of the year, with non-stop cooking and eating, your 100-plus “family” members visiting and pinching your cheeks endlessly, and of course the countless “genats” [կենաց] (toasts). Being one of the few kids who didn’t have to go to school on January 6 was also an added perk!

When I decided to extend my initial three-month stay in Armenia, my host-family told me it was great timing since I would, in a month, experience the local Armenian celebrations of both New Year’s and Christmas. They explained to me how it usually lasted from Dec. 31 to Jan. 11 or so, until the “Old New Year.” After hearing their descriptions of what usually happens on each day, I realized local Armenian traditions were similar to the ones back home—but on steroids. Some families would even go into debt as a result of the cost of celebrations. I told them that during this time, more than ever, not to treat me like a guest, but as a participant who would try to blend in and be an active member as much as possible. My host-sister agreed with a smile that made me a little nervous.

They finally locked him up. It was only a matter of time, really. And frankly, I’m surprised it took them this long. The Turkish-Armenian journalist and entrepreneur Sevan Nisanyan could not accept his place in Turkish society. And a “good” Armenian ought to know better than that. Somehow, Nisanyan always made headlines—from television talk shows to controversial blog posts. He’s been practically swimming in some two-dozen court cases—but Nisanyan is built differently than many of us. In fact, he actually enjoys making waves. You might say he was born in the wrong country, but if you were to ask him, he’d tell you—as he once told me—“I feel perfectly at home in a country where most people would rather see me go. A paradox? I don’t think so. I like the precariousness of my situation. I think I contribute a lot to the society I live in.”
