The Armenian Obsession with Churches

When someone visits Armenia for the first time, the tour itinerary invariably includes a multitude of churches and monasteries. Modern Armenia is the land of churches.

Historic Armenia in Anatolia was also a land of churches, with nearly 4000 churches and monasteries. The Van Lake region alone had over 300 churches. The ancient City of Ani, dubbed the City of 1001 Churches, contained 40 churches.

We are proud of our churches, awed at their architectural beauty and intricate construction techniques, amazed at their settings perched on inaccessible mountaintops.

Iran: Dispute with Azerbaijan Over Polo

Iran said Monday that it would oppose attempts by Azerbaijan to officially register polo with the United Nations as a purely indigenous sport, arguing that polo is an international game and Azerbaijan has no right to claim that it originated there. The official Islamic Republic News Agency quoted Mohammad-Ali Najafi, the head of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization [ICHHTO], as saying in a letter to Unesco that “Iran strongly requests the rejection” of Azerbaijan’s application to register polo — which both nations call chogan — as an entry on the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. A friend who recently returned from abroad conveyed that many Armenians in the Diaspora are frustrated and fed-up with the shenanigans of our government. They are tired of hearing about corruption, monopolies, poor governance, rigged elections and an overall lack of vision and policy.

National pride it seems is eroding, after all, no one wants to be associated with a country that is failing its people and its potential. That frame of mind, if it is true, is not only troubling, it is also counter-productive to the work at hand. Living and working thousands of miles away from Armenia probably makes it much easier to disengage from the processes necessary for nation-building but no one said it was going to be easy.

El objetivo primordial de nuestra institución es el de consolidar la identidad nacional y armenia a través de la educación, entendiendo por ésta, el desarrollo de las potencialidades creativas del ser humano en la interacción con los otros.
Compartiendo la noción de que el acceso al saber en general, a través de una lengua, crea espacios de democratización social y cultural (Armendáriz y Ruiz Montani, 2005: 21), procuramos brindar a nuestros estudiantes la posibilidad de reconocer y valorar el aprendizaje de la lengua armenia como aspecto constitutivo de la identidad del pueblo armenio y como instrumento de crecimiento personal y de llegada a otros, para construir una visión más amplia de un mundo multicultural.

Զաքարեանը Յուլիս 29, 2013 թուակիր բացատրողագիր մը յղած էր Էջմիածնի Գերագոյն Հոգեւոր խորհուրդին, որ Յուլիս 30-31ին կոչուած էր քննելու Սրբազան Հօր հրաժարականը։ «Նոր Յառաջ» զայն լոյս ընծայած է իբր պատմական փաստաթուղթ եւ իբր լրացուցիչ նիւթ Նորվան Սրբազանի Թեմական Պատգամաւորական Ժողովին արտասանած խօսքին, որուն ընթացքին պատգամաւորներ պահանջած են որ այդ բացատրողագիրը ընթերցուի։

Soy el Lic. Eduardo Karsaclian, y me dirijo a Usted en esta Carta Abierta, como profesor de la Escuela de Estudios Orientales de la Universidad desde 1992 en materias de Historia de Armenia, su cultura y su religión.

Con gran tristeza me entero de la convocatoria en la Escuela de Estudios Orientales de un “Concurso de Ensayos” denominado “Qué se yo sobre Azerbaiyán”, mismo que es organizado por la embajada de ese país, al amparo de una cátedra de estudios que mantiene en la Universidad Nacional de La Plata, y que presentará una empleada diplomática de esa misión en forma personal, en la propia Escuela, ante los estudiantes de la carrera.

The rug was woven by orphans in the 1920s and formally presented to the White House in 1925. A photograph shows President Calvin Coolidge standing on the carpet, which is no mere juvenile effort, but a complicated, richly detailed work that would hold its own even in the largest and most ceremonial rooms.

Important Archive Discovered During Excavations in Artashat

Archaeologists have discovered ancient archives during excavations in Artashat, the capital city of Greater Armenia.  

Pavel Avetisyan, Director of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences and head of the excavations, told ArmInfo that two archives dating back to the first and second centuries B.C. were found during previous diggings. The third archive was found this year near a Roman-type ancient bathhouse, on the hill of Khor Virap, with a total of 850 documents. It contains exceptional information about the late period of Artashat.

Taner Akcam Awarded MESA’s Prestigious Hourani Book Prize

Historian Taner Akcam has recently received the Middle East Studies Association’s (MESA) 2013 Hourani Book Prize for The Young Turks’ Crime Against Humanity: The Armenian Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing in the Ottoman Empire. Akcam is the Robert Aram, Marianne Kaloosdian and Stephen and Marion Mugar Chair in Armenian Genocide Studies at Clark University.

Developing complex models and postulating theories, writing academic papers, organizing high-level conferences and advancing policies to address some of the most pressing issues facing the Armenian nation is typically the method we employ. We discuss and analyze, argue incessantly, lose our composure in the melee of verbal and pseudo-intellectual traffic and usually end up nowhere.

One of the most crippling problems in contemporary Armenian life is the divide or disconnect between our two selves – the homeland and the Diaspora. We have yet to find the right formula that will help us to see the world and ourselves with a common vision and end game.

Sometimes the answers are so very simple. Case in point, the men from Moush.

David Nalbandián, el último bastión de la Legión, anunció hoy su retiro en una conferencia de prensa. A los 31 años, el cordobés confirmó que dejará el tenis profesional. El Rey David jugará su partido despedida ante Rafael Nadal, en el encuentro de exhibición del sábado 23 de noviembre, en La Rural. "Es un día triste, pero el hombro no me da", lamentó Nalbandian, quien llegó a estar en el puesto 3 del ranking mundial. Así es como decidió terminar con su carrera.
