Armenian Apostolic Church to canonize Genocide victims

The Episcopal Conference of the Armenian Apostolic Church, held from September 24-27 at the Holy See Echmiadzin and attended by 62 archbishops and bishops, discussed the issue of restoring the tradition of beatification and beatifying the victims of the Armenian Genocide.

Armenian Studies and Truth

Armenian studies, like all other scientific disciplines, should have as a starting point and as its aim disclosing truth. As a true reflection of the Armenian national image, Armenological truth demands a thorough approach to all topics and subjects that constitute the Armenian space. First Bishops’ Synod in 600 Years Commences in Etchmiadzin

On September 24, 2013, His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, and His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, presided over the commencement of a Bishops’ Synod of the Armenian Church at the Mother See of Holy Echmiadzin, the first such congregation in 600 years. The Synod called together 62 archbishops and bishops (from a total of 75) from the church dioceses in Armenia and all around the world. They are due to discuss a number of theological and ecclesiastical issues over four days of meetings.

"Dear Armen" Will Have a Sold Out Debut in Yerevan

We had reported about "Dear Armen," a finalist project in the "Shift" initiative sponsored by ONEArmenia a few months ago. Now we are glad to inform that, presented by Saboteur Productions, it will debut as a work in progress in Yerevan on Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at The Club (Agoump), at Tumanyan and Parpetsi. Nineteen-fifteen was the date that separated a significant part of the Armenian Nation from not only its homeland, but from the historical reality as well. Western Armenia was marginalized from the collective concerns and reality of the Armenians living in the diaspora, as if the genocide had eradicated it from the hearts of its inhabitants. The severity of this marginalization is evidenced by the fact that no serious and sustained contact has been made with it since 1915, which has led us to the alienation of Western Armenia and consequently to its “taboo”-ization.

Y los casi seis mil que han abandonado Siria por temor de nuevas persecuciones. Se sigue temiendo la utilización de armas químicas por parte del régimen de Bashar al Assad, pero si los rebeldes conquistan Alepo, casi cien mil armenios podrían convertirse en las victimas de un nuevo genocidio. Entre los muchos pueblos que temen una intervención estadounidense contra Assad, los armenios son los que tiemblan más.

On Accountability: the ARF and Its "Ties that Bind"

Well, I would not be exposing a big secret if I said that was exactly my intention. The recent article "ARF Conference Concludes in Yerevan" provided a general overview of the conference and the main issues concerning the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF). As a member of the Armenian Youth Federation and a supporter of the ARF, it distressed me greatly to see one glaring omission from the list, and for that matter, most contemporary discussions: repatriation.

ARF Conference Concludes in Yerevan

On Aug. 24-26, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Bureau held a conference in Yerevan to discuss four key topics: organizational problems, the situation in the Caucasus and its implications on Armenia, the country’s domestic realities, and the relationship between the diaspora and Armenia. ARF delegates and representatives from various Armenian communities in the diaspora, as well as from various regions of Armenia, attended the talks.

As Armenia turns 22 this month, our country finds itself at a crossroads—perhaps the most defining one in its independent existence. After four years of negotiations with the European Union (EU) on the terms of an Association Agreement as part of the Eastern Partnership program, President Serge Sarkisian last week announced Armenia would join the Russian-led Customs Union.

The Customs Union of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and now Armenia will be the foundation of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) with its own executive body and a single currency. To be launched in January 2015, the EEU is largely seen as Russia’s alternative to the EU.

Աշնանային քաղաքական սէզոնը սկսուեց մեծ նորութեամբ: Մոսկուայում ՌԴ նախագահ Վլադիմիր Պուտինի հետ հանդիպման ժամանակ ՀՀ նախագահ Սերժ Սարգսեանը յայտարարեց, որ Հայաստանը մտադիր է անդամակցել Մաքսային Միութեանը եւ ապագայ Եւրասիական Տնտեսական Միութեանը եւ խստօրէն հետեւելու նրա ռեգլամենտներին: Այս նորութիւնը մէկ երեկոյի ընթացքում ռումբի պէս պայթեց ամառային շոգից ընդարմացած հայաստանեան հասարակութեան մէջ եւ միանգամից վերջ դրեց այն տարակուսանքին, թէ ինչպէս է Հայաստանը պատկերացնում իր ինտեգրման հեռանկարը:

How Russia Pulled Armenia into the Customs Union

The European Union’s Eastern Partnership was dealt a major blow as Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan made a surprise announcement that his republic will join Russia’s Customs Union during a visit to Moscow in early September. E.U. leaders expressed shock and dismay at the surprise about-face, while members of the Armenian opposition protested the decision outside the presidential palace in Yerevan.

Armenians in a Hurry Toward the 19th Century?

The recent protests and turmoil in Turkey fostered an already existing – though curious – trend among Armenians worldwide. Some members of the Armenian diaspora expressed strong support for the Turkish protesters in their struggle against the more and more authoritarian regime driven by the AKP. This trend has certainly been facilitated by the fact that the Gezi Park events arose just after the commemoration of the Armenian Genocide by some Turkish activists in Istanbul and in other places in Turkey. Therefore, members of the Armenian diaspora who were there on this occasion may have taken part in – or may have at least been witness to – the confrontation between the Turkish regime and its opponents. The unarticulated – and sometimes thoughtless – mentality that drives these Armenians to such an attitude probably comes from the vague belief that the Turkish state is an arch villain, that any opponents of it partake in the longstanding struggle of the Armenian people and could eventually share their fate. Thus, in the minds of these people, an odd connection may have developed, bolstered by some nascent, romantic fraternalism in the tear gas: that the non-democratic nature of the Turkish state and its stubbornness in denying the Armenian Genocide are somehow linked and that, conversely, a democratic Turkey would necessarily pave the way to the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

Հայոց ցեղասպանութեան ինստիտուտ–թանգարանի տնօրէն Հայկ Դեմոյեանը Tert.am–ի հետ զրոյցում անդրադառնում է Հայոց ցեղասպանութեան 100-ամեակին ընդառաջ իր ղեկավարած կառոյց կողմից կատարուող աշխատանքին: Անդրադառնալով Հայոց Ցեղասպանութեան ճանաչման գործին` Հայկ Դեմոյեանը նշում է, որ պէտք է անընդհատ նոր եղանակներ գտնել, որպէսզի ճնշումը, յատկապէս հոգեբանական դաշտում, աւելի մեծացուի, քանի որ ամէն մի ճանաչում, նրանց այլեւս բերում է ակնյայտ ցնցումների:

Plans for "Turkish Plot" Put on Hold

A proposal to erect a plaque at Mount Hope cemetery is in limbo after it unleashed a storm of unexpected international controversy, says Mayor Chris Friel.

"There are so many aggressive and very angry groups, and accusations and absolute misunderstandings of the situation," that the plan is now "officially on hold," Friel said Thursday.

"We're backing away" until a response is received from the federal government and city council has an opportunity to review and discuss it, he said.

Friel said the plan had stirred up negative commentary "on an international level, far beyond what a municipality can handle."
