Reflections on Movement Building: Fostering the Culture of Resistance and Solidarity

Babken Der-Grigorian

Movement building is messy. There are too many factors beyond its control, too many opportunities for missteps, too many unknowns. There is no instruction manual. Often, there is barely a clear idea of what the final outcome should even look like. For this reason, a movement’s long-term success depends in large part on its ability at self-reflection or praxis – the merger of theory and practice. What we are witnessing in Yerevan today is unprecedented. It’s not perfect but that’s ok. Something worked, and it worked well. In under a week, the bus fare hike was reversed (at least temporarily). But, this isn’t the birth of a movement. More important than a birth, this is the maturing of a movement. This is a movement that is growing more experienced and more confident with every step it takes. Behind the backdrop of stopping the 50% bus fare increase, new forms of organizing and movement building are taking shape – and with it an emerging new culture of resistance and solidarity, the building blocks of systemic social change. In light of the recent victory, self-reflection seems appropriate and prudent.

Ուղեվարձի թանկացման դէմ բողոքի գործողութեան հանրային ռեսուրսը

Did the Armenian Writers Conference Walk the Talk?

Lucine Kasbarian

“Armenian writers who, as a result of bitter fate, create in foreign languages are not foreigners, but faithful and dedicated ambassadors of their Armenian blood and spirit in non-Armenian surroundings.”
-- Sarkis Guiragossian, Aztag daily newspaper, 2005

There are several schools of thought about how to behave in a foreign country. “When in Rome, do as the Romans do,” is one such advisory.
But – and I’m really thinking of Armenia-Diaspora relations, what about a self-identifying Roman whose family has been in exile for several generations? What if this individual often visited Rome and participated in its culture with an eye on solidarity with its people? And what if Rome was in economic and political turmoil, and the people were leaving in droves?  Could one then afford to merely “do as the Romans do?”

After Birth Comes Education

Hovik Afyan
Translated by Vartan Matiossian
Perhaps what was born in Armenia on July 25 has to be called civil society. In any case, this new Armenian phenomenon has all the qualities necessary to be called civil society. First, it is not class-driven, because the driver of the valuable foreign car stopped by the young man who could only dream of that car; second, it is not political, because, although certain politicians appeared in the ranks of the movement, nobody listened to them, and they did not say anything. And, which is no less important, this movement is concrete and clear in the question of issue and purpose: it perfectly know what it wants and from whom.

People Win: Price Hikes in Yerevan Public Transport Suspended

Following days of angry protests against the City Council’s decision to hike public transportation fares by 50 percent, Mayor Taron Margaryan issued a statement on Thursday, July 25, in the night (Yerevan hour) reversing the decision and rolling back the fares to their original amount.
The mayor announced that he has already begun the process of creating a task-force of experts and interested individuals who will closely analyze the decision of public transportation fare hikes and enhancement of Yerevan’s public transportation system, and until that group’s final report, he halted the execution of the fare hike.

Family Memories Published in Long-Running Church Newsletter Series

Elise Kalfayan

What was daily life like in Western Armenian provinces and communities before the Genocide, and how did families adapt as they emigrated to the U.S.? Stories and memories passed down to parishioners of United Armenian Congregational Church, printed in the church’s Herald publication over the past four years, are a rich source of cultural history.
Starting with Gesaria/Kayseri, series editor Joyce Abdulian selected regions and asked church members to contribute family memories. Launching the series, she wrote “The Herald hopes to continue featuring family life in the old country as part of our Armenian heritage and culture…” The response was very enthusiastic, and continues to the present as UACC looks forward to celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The "Khojaly Accusation" of Thomas Goltz

Russell Pollard

I was intrigued by Shaunt Oozoonian’s report  from the presentation at University of California, Irvine (UCI) called the “Khojaly Accusation of 1992”. This presentation included a viewing of the film by Thomas Goltz called “Azerbaijan through Foreign Eyes.” During the Karabakh war Goltz was a journalist working from the Azeri side, and now he is a professor at Montana State University. In his book, “Azerbaijan Diary,”  he comes across as a very brash self-assured individual and proclaims himself as being the journalist who  “broke the Khojaly story” to the US media in February 1992. Given this accolade I was surprised to read that his performance at this meeting was unconvincing and disappointing.

Thomas Goltz. Born in Japan. Graduate of New York University, majoring in Near Eastern issues. He has been a journalist for fifteen years in Turkey and then in the former Soviet republics. He is the author of three books: “Azerbaijan Diary,” “Chechnya Diary,” “Georgia Diary.” He cooperates closely with Azerbaijani organizations of the U.S. and Canada (see http://ru.wikipedia.org)
He authored the first publication about the events of Khojaly in the international press. The Washington Post printed an article with his signature on February 27, 1992. Here it is:

How Azerbaijan is Like "The Godfather"

Michael Weiss

Few developments speak so well of how far Caucasian dictatorships have come since the grey days of the Soviet Union as the fabulously wealthy and incredibly investment-savvy 15-year-old male heir of Azerbaijan's ruling family.
When he was a mere 11 years old, Heydar Aliyev, the son of Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev, purchased $44 million in luxury mansions on Palm Jumeirah, the elite artificial archipelago built by Dubai and known for housing both holidaying British soccer players and thieving Russian tax officials. $44 million is, in the words of the Washington Post's Andrew Higgins, who broke the story in 2010, "roughly 10,000 years worth of salary for the average citizen of Azerbaijan." But young Heydar wasn't the only member of his family engaged in Gulf property speculation. His two older sisters, Leyla and Arzu, were also listed as owners in Dubai's Land Department registry. Together, the three Aliyev children invested in $75 million in Dubai real estate, which certainly is impressive considering that their father's official annual income as a public servant is just $228,000. When asked for comment by Higgins, who showed how the date of birth and name for the listed Dubai owner was the same as Ilham's dauphin, Aliyev's spokesman Azer Gasimov replied: "I have no comment on anything. I am stopping this talk. Goodbye."

Levon Thomassian's "Summer of '42"

Benjamin F. Alexander
Throughout the twentieth century, nearly every episode of Armenian history had a Dashnak [A.R.F.] and an anti-Dashnak version. The life of Drastamat Kanayan, more commonly known as General Dro, was no exception, especially where his actions in Germany during World War II were concerned. As was revealed publicly right after the war ended, Dro and several other Dashnak notables, with no known formal party sanction, made overtures to the Nazi high command and formed an Armenian Legion to assist the German regime. Other Armenians were also involved with the Nazis. What did they do, and why did they do it? Ambiguities have lingered.

Nuevos triunfos de la ética

Osvaldo Bayer

In 1963 a joint initiative of the youth organizations of the local Armenian community led to the unprecedented commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the genocide and its recognition by Uruguay in 1965. A communique dated July 5, 2013, signed by Archbishop Hakob Kelendjian, Primate of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Uruguay, and Mr. Ruben Aprahamian, honorary consul of the Republic of Armenia, has reported the formation of the Commission of Commemoration of the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide of the Armenian Community of Uruguay. The committee has been formed by representatives of all religious and lay organizations of the community, whose center is Montevideo, the capital.

More Destruction of Armenian Heritage Sites in Turkey

Collectif 2015: Réparations

While new acts of destruction of Armenian heritage sites are taking  place in Turkey, as a continuation of the politics of effacing the Armenian past in the wake of the genocide of the Armenians at the beginning of the 20th century, the Collective 2015: Réparations joins those in Turkey who have dared to oppose these political operations of the State.
The destruction of Armenian heritage sites continues at this very moment under cover of urban renewal projects, as several articles of such newspapers as Agos, Radikal and also Taraf  in Turkey have pointed out.

“Who were they? Were they actually Armenian? Did they look like us? Were they different, very different? Ishkhanyan’s grandfather was from Hamshen, as the reporter learned when Hamshen expert Hovan Simonian took a gene sample from Ishkhanyan for his Armenian gene project.

Seventeen Properties Returned to Armenians in Diyarbakir

The Diyarbakir Regional Directorate of Foundations has decided to return seventeen properties in Turkey’s southeastern province of Diyarbakir to the Armenian community as a result of an initiative launched over the past year by the Diyarbakir Surp Giragos Armenian Church Foundation.
The Sabah daily reported on Monday, July 15, that during a restoration project for the historic Surp Giragos Armenian Church in 2009, the Diyarbakir Surp Giragos Armenian Church Foundation discovered a document listing the properties owned by Armenians before they left Diyarbakir between 1910 and 1921. The document reportedly lists 190 properties in twenty neighborhoods. After the discovery of the document, the foundation filed a petition with the Diyarbakir Regional Directorate of Foundations demanding the return of these properties after it found the current real estate listings of the properties.

Are Sounds Of The Caucasus Shaped By The Mountains Themselves?

Richard Solash

In the 10th century, an Arab geographer described the Caucasus region as a "mountain of tongues." The nickname has stuck to this day, likely because of how well it captures two of the area's main features: its dramatic cliffs and its array of languages.
But new and controversial research by a U.S. linguist suggests that the "mountains" may have more to do with the "tongues" than anyone has guessed.
In a study published last month in the journal "Plos One," Caleb Everett, an anthropological linguist at the University of Miami, claims that a special class of sounds occurring in almost all of the languages of the Caucasus may be due to "the direct influence" of the region's high altitude.

Setting the Record Straight: An Exchange

Martha Skrypuch (July 2, 2013)
Dear Mr. Antourian,
I read with interest your article about the Ottoman WWI Internees from Brantford and would like to clarify some of the points you've made. I am indeed a member of the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association. In addition to the five novels I have written about the Armenian Genocide and the Georgetown Boys, I have written books about the internment of Ukrainians in WWI (my grandfather was an internee and my book Silver Threads was the first commercial book to ever be written on this topic). I also have written about the Holodomor, and have received hate mail and death threats for doing so.
I do not shy away from difficult historical topics.

The Internment Plot Thickens

Gary Antourian

Demonstrating “tolerance” toward others is an essential quality which every person and society should practice, but tolerance should be extended to people who have the courage to admit their crimes and repent for them. To demonstrate tolerance to the Turkish government and its denial machine is disservice not only to the victims of the Armenian Genocide but also to all victims of genocides. Various Turkish governments and their denial industries not only did not recognize their predecessors' crime against the Armenian nation but instead inflicted upon subsequent generations of Armenians the most heinous, inhuman, and cruel experience through a farcical denial policy. By extending tolerance, without atonement and compensation, we set a precedent and send a message to the perpetrators of Genocide, Holocaust, and crimes against humanity that if a criminal persists in denying his crime he can get away with it. As many Genocide scholars have stated, the last act of genocide is its denial.

For the Benefit of the Turkish Ambassador: An Exchange

Marsha Skrypuch's Interest in the Topic

(June 16, 2013)
Marsha Skrypuch here, author of three novels set during the Armenian Genocide (The Hunger, Nobody's Child, Daughter of War), two chapter books about the Georgetown Boys (Aram's Choice and Call Me Aram) as well as author of two books set during the internment of Ukrainians in WWI (Silver Threads, Prisoners in the Promised Land).
My own Ukrainian grandfather was interned as an enemy alien in WWI and this topic is of deep interest to me.

For the Benefit of the Turkish Ambassador (Public Service Announcement)

"Keghart" (editorial)

On a cold night in late November 1914 police rounded up 100 Turkish immigrants living in Brantford, Ontario (56 miles west of Toronto). Most of the arrested were laborers in a local foundry. A few days later the 100 men were shipped off to a concentration camp in Kapuskasing (then called MacPherson), 520 miles north of Toronto. The Turkish immigrants spent most of the First World War in the Canadian gulag (average winter temperature -25C).
What was their crime?

From Bickering to Dialogue: Believing in a Greater Armenian Community

Raffi Yeretsian

The unwinding of events following Bishop Bagrat Galstanyan’s ousting as Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of Canada, at the 30th Diocesan Delegates’ Assembly a little over a month ago, was as captivating as it was distressing. (*) The widespread concern for community affairs we have witnessed was unprecedented. For once, a decision mattered. The announcement of the bishop’s removal came as a shock to many who shared an affection for the warm and charismatic clergyman who embodied the greater ideals of inclusiveness, service and unity. The dismay expressed by frustrated individuals revealed a malaise that went beyond the outcome of the contested vote. Indeed, since the beginning of the crisis, the members of the community were not treated as stakeholders. They were left uninformed, distracted from the real issues and too often taken for granted. Although action should have come earlier, it is suggested that a public forum with the purpose of facilitating a dialogue among delegates and community members is the most expedient way of turning this crisis into an opportunity to further political maturity.

When I was in Paris in May, my friend Virginia Pattie Kerovpyan invited me to join her on the Peniche Anako for a jazz concert. The Peniche Anako is a canal barge docked on the West Bank of the La Villette Basin in the 19th arrondissement. The basin, which is the largest artificial lake in Paris, was filled with water in December 1808 and is part of the 130-kilometer (80.7-mile) Parisian Canal Network that is operated by the municipality. Canal barges have access to about 22 kilometers of the network.

The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in his defence of the project of building a new shopping centre and luxury apartments at the place of Gezi Park in Istanbul, said something symbolic: the reconstruction plans, which supposedly would resurrect the architecture of an old military barracks based on the architecture of a 19th century Ottoman building, would amount to “respecting history (1).”

What began last week as a peaceful sit-in to protest the uprooting of trees from Gezi Park, one of Istanbul's last open green spaces near Taksim Square, has morphed into a broader Occupy movement against the Turkish government, with massive demonstrations in many Turkish cities, as well as solidarity demonstrations throughout the world. The movement shows the deep discontent within a large cross section of Turkish society against the increasingly authoritarian government, and especially its prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, of the ruling Islamist AKP party. People have reacted with shock at the Turkish police's disproportionate, brutal repression of the protests, as well as Erdogan's and other government officials' apparent contempt for and vilification of the protestors, and their seeming indifference to their concerns. As the protest movement continues to unfold, there has been much analysis about the significance of the protests, the way they reflect class and identity divisions within Turkey and their possible repercussions, such as here, here and here.

The Role of Hrant Dink in Armenian-Turkish Social Developments

Ruben Melkonyan (*)

Hrant Dink, who gained fame due to his journalistic and editorial activity since 1996, was definitely known to a small part of Armenian and Turkish societies.  Even the majority of Turkologists had a shallow understanding of Dink and this was limited to brief information on his active participation in left-wing movements in Turkey.
In the initial phase, the establishment of "Agos" newspaper was of essential and serious significance mostly for the Istanbul Armenian community, later on expanding its geographical impact. The existing "traditional" media of the Istanbul Armenian community had more community-like, so called limited targets, but "Agos" and Hrant Dink initially acted beyond "narrow community" newspaper limits and at last succeeded in it. Within a certain period of time Dink became more famous due to his willingness to present Armenian issues to the Turkish and Turkish-speaking audience, as well as due to the consecutive steps in this direction. As a result, he found himself in the maelstrom of the Armenian-Turkish relations.

The Revolt of the Rising Class

Bill Keller

In the upscale Istanbul suburb of Bebek, at 9 p.m. sharp, the diners began drumming on the tables or tapping their wineglasses with forks. The traffic passing along the Bosporus chimed in with honking horns and flashing headlights. It was a genteel symphony of solidarity with the protesters who a few days earlier were confronting fire hoses and tear gas in the heart of the city and elsewhere around Turkey.
Those street battles that caught our attention this summer have mostly been policed into submission, and the world’s cameras have moved on, but the afterlife is interesting.

The Armenian Past of Taksim Square

Emily Greenhouse

Taksim Square, like Tahrir Square and Zuccotti Park before it, is just another space in a city: it could have been one more spot to meet friends, or to read a book under a tree. But Turkey’s Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, decided he’d like to replicate the Ottoman-era Taksim military barracks on the site, and build it into a shopping mall and a mosque. In late May, several dozen environmentalists began protesting Erdoğan’s designs in Gezi Park, the island of trees within the Square, and were attacked by Turkish police with tear gas and water cannons. Soon, as Elif Batuman wrote, “only fifteen per cent were protesting the destruction of trees, while forty-nine per cent were protesting police violence against the kinds of people who were protesting the destruction of the trees.” Since then, nearly eight thousand protesters have been injured. By now, the protest has broadened into an objection to Erdoğan’s religious agenda and authoritarian rule. Today, “Taksim Square” is no longer just a tangle of people and plazas but a byword for a clash of ideas, a movement, a battleground.
