Houshamadyan: Recreating Armenian Life in the Ottoman Empire

Historian Vahé Tachjian earned his Ph.D. in history and civilization at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris. His research covers the period of the French occupation of Cilicia, Syria, and Lebanon between World War I and World War II; the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire; refugee problems in the Middle East; and Kurdish-Armenian relations. He has carried out extensive research in archives in Paris, Berlin, Nantes, London, Cairo, Beirut, Aleppo, and Yerevan, and is currently the project director and chief editor of www.houshamadyan.org, which was created in 2011 by the Berlin-based Houshamadyan not-for-profit Association, founded in 2010. The website aims is to reconstruct the daily life of the Ottoman-Armenian and his social environment in all its facets. Articles and various materials about the Harput (Kharpert), Palu, and Marash regions have already appeared on the website’s pages. New articles and materials about many other Armenian-populated areas are in preparation.

Tachjian’s publications include La France en Cilicie et en Haute-Mésopotamie. His new book, based on the diaries of two Armenian deportees (1915-18) from Ayntab, is currently in preparation for publication.

Երեք ամիս շարունակ ընդգրկուած լինելով Մաշտոցի զբօսայգում ծաւալուած ապօրինի կառուցապատումների դէմ շարժման մէջ եւ ներկայ լինելով այնտեղ կազմակերպուած միջոցառումներին՝ տեղեկացայ մեր իրականութեան վերաբերեալ մի շարք նորանոր խնդիրների: Դրանցից ամէնից շատ ինձ յուզեց ցմահ բանտարկեալների խնդիրը (բոլորը կը համաձայնեն, որ մեր փոքրիկ հանրապետութեան համար 104 ցմահ դատապարտեալ ունենալը չափազանց մեծ թիւ է): Այդ հարցին ծանօթանալու առիթը եղաւ Մաշտոցի զբօսայգում կազմակերպուած Մհեր Ենոքեանի «Ես զրուցում եմ քեզ հետ, Մարդ» վերնագրով գրքի շնորհանդէսը, որի վաճառքից ստացուած գումարը հեղինակի ցանկութեամբ եւ նրա անունից հարազատները փոխանցում են քաղցկեղով հիւանդ երկու երեխաների հաշուեհամարներին:

Հայաստանեան հերթական ընտրութիւնից յետոյ հերթական «խորհրդաւոր գիշեր»ուանը յաջորդող առաւօտը... Չէ՛, այս առաւօտը նախորդ հերթականներից շատ էր տարբեր։ Կիրակի օրն իր ուղիղ եթերներով, աչքիդ առաջ կնիքի օքսիդա-ցնդուող թանաքային ձեռնածութեամբ, ընտրատարածքների առջեւ կասկածելի կուտակումներով եւ ոչ մի կասկած չյարուցող ընտրակաշառքներով դարձաւ հերթական մի անցեալ օր, իսկ Երկուշաբթի, Մայիսի եօթի առաւօտն իր անսովորութիւնը բացայայտեց իր. . . լռութեամբ։ Լուռ էին մարդիկ, լուռ էր քաղաքը։

Այս հրատարակութեան լուրը տեղին արծարծում մըն էր՝ Սուրիոյ մտահոգիչ իրավիճակին մէջ դէմ յանդիման, կերպով մը յիշեցնելու հալէպահայ գաղութի վերջին երկու տասնամեակներու հրատարակչական-մշակութային աշխուժութիւնն ու զարթօնքը։

97 Years Later, on the Road to Ayash…

The following article was published in the Turkish daily "Radikal" on 24 April 2012. The author accompanied historian Ara Sarafian on a trip to Ayash, on the trail of around 85 Armenian political prisoners who were sent there following the arrests in Constantinople on 24 April 1915. According to Sarafian, 70 of these prisoners were killed in the following few months. His trip was part of a broader project examining these arrests and the ultimate fate of the prisoners concerned.

Armenia Votes amid Reports of Widespread Irregularities

So far, the preliminary results of the parliamentarian elections of May 6, 2012 in Armenia (counting 1,982 polling stations, see www.elections.am) show that the Republican Party of Armenia received the most votes, 44.05 percent; they were followed by the Prosperous Armenia Party, with 30.20 percent; the Armenian National Congress, 7.10 percent; Heritage party, 5.79 percent; the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, 5.73 percent; the Country of Law party, 5.49 percent; the Armenian Communist Party, 1.06 percent; the Armenian Democratic Party, 0.37 percent; and the United Armenians party, 0.20 percent.

Ամերիկահայ երգիչ Յարութ Փամպուքճեանը (Ձախ Յարութ) Երեւանում է: Ասում է` Հայաստան է եկել «Ժառանգութիւն» կուսակցութեան առաջնորդ Րաֆֆի Յովհաննիսեանի հրաւէրով, չնայած զբաղուածութեանը` չի մերժել. «Ես նրանց գերդաստանի երգիչն եմ, ուրախութիւնների ու տխրութիւնների վկան, իսկ Րաֆֆիի հետ համարեա տարեկիցնէր ենք: Ամերիկայում էդ ընտանիքն է եղել իմ առաջին ծափահարողը: Իսկ ինչ վերաբերում է քաղաքականութեանը, այն իմ արիւնն ու խառնուածքը չէ, քարոզարշաւին էլ երգել եմ, բայց բեմից չե՛մ ասել` ժողովուրդ, Րաֆֆիին ընտրէք, որովհետեւ դա իմ գործը չի, ժողովրդի գործն է…»: Երգիչը նեղւում է, երբ ամէն ինչի մէջ այլ ենթատեքստ են փնտռում, պրովոկացիոն հարցերով իրենից փորձում ինչ-որ բաներ կորզել. «Ասում են` ինչքա՞ն դրամ են քեզ տուել, որ երգես: Հօ ամէն ինչ դրամի մէջ չէ՞, էդ ընտանիքը ազնուութեան մարմնացում է, ես էլ իրենց շատ յարգում եմ: Ի դէպ, երբ 25 տարեկանում Ամերիկա եկայ, 1,5 տարի ձրի երգեցի բոլոր կուսակցութիւնների, հայրենակցական միութիւնների ու ազգային կառոյցների համար: Հայկական դպրոցնէր կան, որոնց շաղախի մէջ իմ քրտինքը կայ, ինչ ձեռնարկ եղել է, դրամահաւաքի համար երգել եմ»:

Armenia: Backhanded Victory for Environmental Activists

After almost three months of continuous protests and sit-ins staged by activists in a battle to save Mashtots Park,  batthe Armenian President, Serzh Sargsyan, ordered the removal of structures already constructed on the basis that they weren't aesthetically appealing, a reason that wasn't on the agenda of those fighting against illegal construction in one of Yerevan's last remaining green spaces.

In addition to their demands to preserve the park for health and environmental reasons, protesters objected to the 'boutique' kiosks because no public hearings were held on the matter and no environmental impact assessment was conducted on the area, both of which are required by law. Voice of the Nightingale voiced its concerns [AM] with the government's disregard for rule of law.

The president announced that the construction of the kiosks were perfectly legal, the mayor had done everything correctly, but the kiosks weren't so pleasing to look out and it wouldn't be a good idea to have them as eye sores for the next few years.")
